Carnic Border Trail (Peace Trail)

One hundred fifty-five kilometers along the edge of two nations. And underneath your boots the entire time lies a war over a century old.

Karnischer Höhenweg, route number 403, nicknamed Friedensweg (Peace Trail), runs the main ridge of the Carnic Alps precisely along the Austria-Italy border. From Sillian in East Tyrol to Thörl-Maglern near Arnoldstein in Carinthia. Eight to eleven days, roughly 8500 meters of climbing. This is no weekend stroll. It's a ridge walk for legs and for your mind.

Why this way? Because no other Alpine long-distance trail puts you literally on a front line. From 1915 through WWI, this was the mountain war line between Austria-Hungary and Italy. Both sides carved trenches, caverns, artillery positions, and supply paths into the rock. And it's still there, barbed wire, trenches, tunnels, even after a century. In the 1970s, the Dolomitenfreunde club linked the old military paths and turned the front into a Peace Trail. At Plöckenpass, an open-air museum of Alpine war 1915–1917 stands exactly where it happened.

Terrain? Hard but fair. In places steel cables and ladders secure you; elsewhere you simply walk a stone ridge with views of both countries at once. You don't need special ferrata gear. But you do need a head for heights, and legs that'll carry you over thirty summits if you don't shortcut.

First major stop is Sillianer Hütte at 2447 meters, panorama over Sexten Dolomites. From the ridge past Obstansersee-Hütte beside a mountain lake. Then Filmoor-Standschützenhütte at 2350 m, a small, austere hut built from 1976 onward by Austria's Bundesheer, named for the Tyrolean Standschützen who held the Filmoor and Kinigat front in 1915. Further on, Porzehütte, Hochweißsteinhaus, and one of the route's most powerful images: Wolayersee. A deep blue lake locked between sheer walls, Wolayersee-Hütte on its shore. Above it, Monte Coglians (Hohe Warte) towers, the Carnic Alps' highest peak, with the Bell of Peace (Glocke des Friedens) hanging on its slope.

For whom? For experienced multiday hikers who've completed other hut-to-hut treks and aren't bothered by exposure. Not for newcomers. Not in spring, the route goes summer, roughly mid-July through late September. Earlier or later, you'll hit snow on the ridge.

Want all eleven days? The route splits into two halves. The western section ends at Plöckenpass; the eastern continues over Zollnersee-Hütte and Nassfeld toward Carinthia. You can hike and descend at several passes, so tailor the trek to your days and strength.

Reservations: Karnic Ridge huts fall under Alpenverein; book at least a week ahead, directly with the hut or by phone. Membership in an Alpine club further discounts fees and provides mountain insurance, on a multiday trek, it pays.

One ridge. Two nations. A front transformed into a Peace Trail. Hike it on your own, that's the whole point.
