Seven days. Seven huts. One loop that starts and ends in Obergurgl, and for nearly the whole week ice lies beneath your feet.
Ötztaler Hüttenrunde is no meadow walk. It's a seven-day high-altitude trek through the heart of the Ötztal Alps, Austria's most glaciated corner: 72 kilometres, 5800 metres of ascent. Converted to legs, in one week you'll climb the equivalent of nearly reaching Mont Blanc's height from sea level. Just with a pack, no cable car and no bottled oxygen.
Yet there's always something to see. Wildspitze (3768 m) towers over the loop, highest peak of the Ötztal Alps and after Großglockner Austria's second-highest mountain. Around it spread glaciers, reservoirs and ridges, with the Austria-Italy border running through. The loop connects seven huts, each with its own story.
Day one you climb from Obergurgl up Langtal valley to Langtalereckhütte (2480 m), a gradual ascent into altitude. Day two a pass carries you into Niedertal valley to Martin-Busch-Hütte (2501 m) below the glacier-hung Similaun. And from here it's a half day's walk to one of the Alps' most famous spots: Tisenjoch at 3210 metres, where in 1991 the ice released Ötzi, a five-thousand-year-old glacier mummy.
Day three heads via ridge to Hochjoch Hospiz in Rofental. A mountain priest and Alpenverein co-founder Franz Senn had the original refuge built here 1869–1872, on a path where shortly before a companion died of exhaustion in a snow storm. Today's hut has stood since 1927 on the opposite slope.
Day four leads to Vernagthütte (2755 m), built 1901 between glaciers Guslarferner and Vernagtferner. Vernagtferner is one of the Alps' longest scientifically monitored glaciers, researchers have been coming here over a hundred years. Day five crosses a pass into Pitztal to Taschachhaus (2434 m), the Alpenverein's training base right at a glacier snout and classic launch point for Wildspitze.
Day six descends into Kaunerstal to Gepatschhaus (1928 m). This is treasure: Austria's very first Alpenverein hut, opened 1873, today heritage-protected. They built it where Gepatschferner's tongue once ended, and that glacier, together with Kesselwandferner, still forms Austria's largest continuous ice field at 18 square kilometres. Day seven brings you up to Kaunergrathütte (2817 m), the loop's highest point with panorama over all of Kaunerrat, then back down to Obergurgl.
Who is it for? Experienced high-altitude hikers with a sure foot. Difficulty is high; some stages cross passes and stay near glacier margins, if you're not certain, hire a mountain guide. Not a trek for your first Alpine week.
When? Classic window is end of June through mid to late September, when huts are staffed and passes walkable. Outside season expect snow and locked doors.
How to book? Through Alpenverein huts via alpenverein.at, each hut separately. Alpenverein membership means lower hut rates, priority if full, and includes rescue insurance useful in this exposed terrain. Book well ahead; these huts fill fast in summer.
