Five kilometres above the Lucknerhaus car park the crowds stop. The Großglockner is behind you, the buses are down in the valley, and ahead lies a range you can walk for four days without meeting a single cable car.
The Schober Group borders Austria's highest mountain, sits entirely inside the core zone of Hohe Tauern National Park, and most people drive straight past it on the way to Heiligenblut. Which is exactly why it is worth the walk.
Day one is short and uncompromising. From the Lucknerhaus (1,918 m) it is five kilometres and 730 metres of ascent to the Glorer Hütte, standing on the Berger Törl at 2,642 m, a saddle people crossed between East Tyrol and Carinthia long before anyone built a bed up here.
Day two puts you on the ridge. 9.4 kilometres over the Kesselkeessattel (2,926 m). In two places you take hold of a steel cable, this is not a via ferrata, it is protection where a fall would be no joke. Then a short cable-secured descent into the Tramerkar and down to the Elberfelder Hütte (2,346 m) at the head of the Gößnitztal. The name comes from a district of Wuppertal; the hut is run by the DAV Wuppertal section.
Day three is the decider. 12.5 kilometres, a thousand metres up, eight hundred down, three saddles in a row: Gößnitzscharte (2,732 m), Untere Seescharte and Perschitztörl. The published stage is graded a difficult mountain path, and six hours is a sober estimate. The reward is the Wangenitzsee-Hütte at 2,508 m above a deep blue lake, the highest hut in the entire Schober Group.
Day four goes down. A short climb to the Obere Seescharte (2,604 m) first, then 1,440 metres of descent past the Roaner Alm to Iselsberg.
What it is not. This is not the full Wiener Höhenweg. That route runs in six stages and, between the Wangenitzsee and Elberfelder huts, takes the long way round via the Adolf-Nossberger-Hütte, the Keeskopf (3,081 m) and the Hornscharte (2,958 m), its key stage, graded difficult. This traverse takes the direct link over the Gößnitzscharte and Untere Seescharte instead, and follows the Wiener Höhenweg where it fits: Glorer–Elberfelder and the descent from the Wangenitzsee to Iselsberg.
Who it suits. Anyone with multi-day experience, a sure foot and an eye for weather. High alpine terrain, snow lingering in the gullies well into summer, saddles near 2,900 m. You do not need a via ferrata set. You do need a steady step.
When. Roughly late June to mid-September, depending on hut opening and how much snow is left.
