Dachstein Week-Long Circuit

Seven days. One mountain. And a glacier melting right in front of you.

Dachstein Wochenrundtour encircles the roof of the Salzburg region, 121 km and 6700 meters of climbing over seven days. That's not a Sunday stroll. That's five climbs and descents along the ridge, with a pack, across karst plateau, glacier drapes, and huts cemented to cliffs at 2500 meters.

You start and finish at Vorderer Gosausee in Gosau, at 933 meters. The lake's reflection of Dachstein is among Austria's most-photographed Alpine views. From that angle, the mountain looks impenetrable. Seven days will prove you can circle it.

The north side holds Hallstätter Glacier, the largest glacier of the Northern Limestone Alps and the northernmost, easternmost ice of the entire Alps. About 2 km² in 2024, it's receding so fast that experts say it could vanish within eight decades. You walk around it while it's still there. That's the main reason to do this trek now, not "someday."

Day one climbs from Gosau to Adamek-Hütte (2196 m) on the north side, at Gosau Glacier. The hut dates to 1908, named for Karl Ritter von Adamek, former Alpenverein president. Its predecessor, Grobgesteinhütte from 1879, stands today as ruin.

Day two crosses Gosaukamm, the western flank crowned by Bischofsmütze (2458 m), to Hofpürgl-Hütte (roughly 1705 m) directly below the bishop's mitre.

Day three is gentler: descent to Theodor-Körner-Hütte (1466 m) from 1922. From its sunny terrace, you see all the way to the High Tauern and Großglockner.

Day four is royal. Ascent to Seethalerhütte (2740 m), Upper Austria's highest hut, beneath the summit itself. ÖAV built it in 1929; due to melting permafrost, they demolished and rebuilt it 2016–2018, reopening at the start of 2019. Twenty-two beds, sleeping bag required.

Day five descends the glacier zone via Krippenstein to Gablonzer Hütte (about 1550 m) on Zwieselalm. Founded by highlanders from Gablonz, today's Jablonec nad Nisou, and open nearly year-round.

Day six climbs to Simony-Hütte (2203 m) directly above Hallstätter Glacier. Oldest hut on the loop: Vienna's Alpenverein built it in 1877 to honor professor Friedrich Simony. A normal route to Hoher Dachstein (2995 m) leads from here, over glacier and via ferrata grade B. Seekers of the summit take it from here.

Day seven is the final descent to historic Austria-Hütte (1638 m) and back to the valley.

For whom: the experienced. Difficulty hard, high-Alpine terrain, glacier sections, seven days of self-sufficiency. This isn't your first hut-to-hut.

When: the short Alpine summer, roughly late June through mid-September, depending on snow and hut openings.

How to book: reserve beds at Alpenverein huts in advance, ideally online. ÖAV or DAV membership means hut discount and mountain insurance as bonus.

Seven days, the mountain showed you its glacier's back. The eighth day, standing at Gosau overlooking the lake, you'll turn and see it whole, and for the first time know what lies behind that wall.
